
In the Gaelic the name means 'son of Paul'. It first appeared in 1414. MacPhails traditionally came from Lochaber in the early 14th century. Associated with Clan Chattan. A number of them were also tenants on the Reay MacKay estates in 1678. Inverernie was in the family from mid 16th century until it was sold about 1763. Highlander James MacPhail was gardener to Lord Hawkesby in 1785.
